Come sempre un’ottima occasione per litigare, oppure per scoprire nuova musica, anzi prestare attenzione a qualcosa che si era sottovalutato. Pitchfork ha messo insieme una classifica dei 100 migliori album rap di tutti i tempi. Che poi sono tempi relativamente giovani dalle prime rime, le prime battle, i mix, i graffiti. Ancora oggi è in Italia è considerata una musica da e per giovani. E invece ormai ne ha fatta di strada: è comunque un prodotto del Novecento. “Per un genere emerso dalla tradizione delle performance dal vivo e costruito su pratiche di campionamento sempre più costose, a volte proibitive, l’hip-hop ha prodotto molti degli album più esaltanti ed essenziali degli ultimi 50 anni di musica popolare”.
Non mancano i colpi di scena e nemmeno i grandi esclusi nel listone stilato a partire dal “Pitchfork Rap Readers’ Poll”, un sondaggio che ha coinvolto i lettori e messo insieme una classifica ricca di classici ma anche di album meno mainstream. Due gettoni per Kendrick Lamar in top10, fuori da quelle prime posizioni sia 2Pac, sia Eminem, sia Jay-Z. Parecchie presenze per Kanye West, quote rosa in minoranza. Al numero 1 un grande classico, una pietra miliare difficile da mettere in discussione: ma è sempre in polemica che si finisce con le classifiche. Pitchfork è comunque una delle riviste musicali più autorevoli e influenti al mondo.
“La storia raccontata da questo gruppo di 100 album – si legge nel testo di presentazione – è quella di un genere spinto da un lato dai progressi tecnologici e costretto, dall’altro, a trovare soluzioni ingegnose per superare barriere fisiche, sociopolitiche e legali. È una delle creazioni americane per eccellenza, quindi è logico che sia afflitta da mali tipicamente americani. Ma alla fine, riflette l’amore sincero, lo stupore e l’entusiasmo per tutto il rap che è entrato nelle nostre vite. Dopotutto, le cose vanno a cicli”.
